White House Releases Executive Order on AI

On October 30, the White House issued an Executive Order on the safe, secure, and trustworthy use of artificial intelligence (AI). The purpose of the order is “to ensure that America leads the way in seizing the promise and managing the risks of artificial intelligence.” In doing so, the Administration lists requirements for Advancing Equity and Civil Rights and Protecting Consumers, Patients, Passengers, and Students. The Executive Order directs federal agencies to develop best practices in AI that take into consideration safety, privacy, civil rights, worker protections, and more. The U.S. Department of Education will have one year to develop resources, policies, and guidance, including an AI Toolkit, to ensure safe, responsible, and nondiscriminatory use of AI in education. Additionally, the Executive Order seeks public engagement to ensure that people with disabilities benefit from AI’s promise while being protected from its risks.
